Israel Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole was known as "Iz", "Brother Iz", sometimes "Big Iz" and even "The Gentle Giant", but it is his music and his soft singing style that everyone remembers .
He was born and raised in Hawaii and, thanks to his relatives, he was exposed to the rich musical culture of Hawaii. For example, Uncle Moe Keale of the Big Iz was a well-known Hawaiian musician and a notable influence for him.
Iz and his brother founded a band that eventually became a huge success, producing albums that played both in Hawaii and on the American continent.
Iz wasn't just a singer; he was also a ukulele teacher. This Gentle Giant was an innovator who introduced influences from jazz and reggae to Hawaiian music and, at the same time, tried to keep the results faithful to the traditional musical heritage of the islands.
